mark cavendish 100708 Tour de france win Stage 5

Reporting from (latimes.com)Montargis, France —

A day after smashing his bike to the ground in a fit of frustration after losing yet another Tour de France sprint stage, Mark Cavendish found redemption Thursday at the end of the 116.5-mile Stage 5 from Epernay to Montargis.

The 24-year-old Cavendish, whose Columbia-HTC teammates led him out perfectly through the tricky finish — where the road narrows and roundabouts suddenly appear — won in 4 hours, 30.50 minutes.

Another American team, Garmin-Transitions, was also at the front of the sprint pack, trying to sneak out an emotional victory for Tyler Farrar, who is riding with a broken bone in his wrist. But it was the emotional Cavendish who stood up in the saddle at the end and who was sobbing on the podium to receive kisses and hugs from the award presenters.

HTC 3.5mm Jack update on future Handset releases

Most phones out there come with a regular 3.5mm jack ready to accommodate your favorite phones and bring your favorite music to your favorite ears. And when we say most phones we certainly don’t mean HTC phones. According to HTC a “vast majority of devices we launch after Hero” will be fitted with a nice, revolutionary, 3.5mm headphone jack. That standard feature is coming to future HTC phones so the company definitely deserves our applause for the day. We could use some insight on those future HTC handsets now that we know they’re not going to need a headphone adapter.

    Here Comes HTC EVO

With only 11 days of use under its belt, the HTC EVO will no doubt soon pass up Nexus One 2.0 % market share as demonstrated in this Chikita Handset Android Market Share Pie Chart.  Nexus One had a 6 month jump on EVO with a January release date. The Motorola Droid dominates the Android market with almost 34% with HTC Hero following far back at close to 10%.  I’m looking for the EVO to make a pretty fast climb to join its HTC brothers Droid Eris, Hero and Droid by the end of Summer.

    HTC Evo 4G

Iit looks a bit strange that a lesser-powered phone, such as the HTC Hero is able to offer better benchmark results compared to EVO 4G that is based on the Snapdragon.  This make the Hero look pretty good, still.

Z Buds – Ear Buds for your HTC Smartphones

Z.buds Edge – Limited Edition – feature a premium length, tangle-free cord. Protected by ZAGG’s premium invisibleSHIELD material. Multiple sliders mean better cord management and greater listening convenience.

Sometimes it’s easy to forget that the HTC Hero is capable of producing quality audio. If you’re going to spend your hard earned cash on accessories a headphone upgrade is essential. Getting a pair of Z.buds is like getting a whole new HTC Hero.

    The Pyramidal Package

As soon as the Z.buds arrived you will be struck by the unique packaging. ZAGG is all about innovation, and since the Z.buds have won the 2009 CES Innovations Design and Engineering Showcase award they have a box to match the product inside.

HTC Hero won’t see upgrade to Android 2.1 until summer 2010

Plenty of UK Hero owners were disappointed this morning upon hearing the news that free Google Maps Navigation had spread beyond the borders of the USA but required Android 1.6 as the minimum OS version. Stuck in their Android 1.5 world, they must have hoped that HTC would just hurry up and open the gates to Eclair heaven, but hurrying up is, regrettably, the opposite of what’s happening. Read the Full Tech Radar post.

    Hero 2.1 Android Release date

HTC Announced that it will update HTC Hero and Droid Eris to Android 2.1

HTC announced that it will update the HTC Hero and the Droid Eris, the Verizon version of the HTC Hero to Android 2.1 next month. HTC previously emailed HTC Hero customers that they would be getting an update to Eclair 2.0, Android Eclair 2.1 has some more features.

The update to 2.1 brings with it more advanced Android features with a pinch zoom for photo album. Another new feature is Google’s navigation service, that gives spoken turn-by-turn directions, formerly only found on the Droid by Motorola and Nexus One.

Android OS 2.1 has speech-to-text, you can enter text in any text field by speaking it out loud into the Droid Eris or HTC Hero. If you tried voice search, it’s like voice search except, it fills in the text form with your spoken words.

The web browser has been updated. There is better camera software, and enhanced weather and news widgets in Android 2.1. The HTC Hero recently won “Best Handset” from GSMA at Mobile World Congress.

HTC Touch Sense also has been updated.  It lets you use multi-touch gestures to pinch-to-zoom to the web browser, and adds some additional homescreen widgets.

A new Touch Sense feature is FriendStream, that brings together all your friends in – Facebook, Twitter, Flikr and email.

HTC Hero – Notes and Tips

    General Notes

To get the MOST out of Android and your Hero, you must embrace the Google Cloud. Get yourself a GMail email account, use the Google calendar, sync your contacts to Google, use Google Picasa, use Google Calenday, use Google Tasks, use Google Docs.

    General Tips

You may try out any paid application in the market for 24 hours. If you uninstall the application inside these 24 hours you will get a full refund. However, you may only do this once. If you reinstall a refunded application you may not return it for a refund again.
    ———————
Turn off WiFi and GPS if you are not using them. They can cause the battery to drain much quicker than if you turned them off. Toggling between these settings is easy via the default HTC widgets.
    ———————
To add a new photo album, just mount the phone via USB to a PC, create a new folder and give it a name. Add your pictures to this folder. Now browse to the “Albums” in your phone and it will automatically create an album with the folder name you specified containing the pictures you added.
    ———————
Calibrate your keyboard!!! You will find using the keyboard waaay better. To this via:

Settings > Local & text > Touch Input > Text Input > Calibration Tool
    ———————
There are 3 types of keyboard available for the Hero built in “full QWERTY”, “Phone keypad” and Compact QWERTY”. Give them a try, one may suit you better. To change do the following:

Settings > Local & text > Touch Input > Keyboard Types
    ———————
A Class 6 micro sd card may speed up your Hero.
    ———————
If you have both WiFi and data connections turned on, your phone will default to using the WiFi connection as long as you are connected to a WiFi network. So no need to turn mobile data off using home WiFi.
