HTC Hero: Why to get an unlocked HTC Hero in US?

Unlocked HTC Hero phone are available now for approx. $600 US dollars.  Your just a click away if you click on an add to the left of here.

I found some pretty straight forward ideas on why you should do this on a gadget forum that I can’t really remember where it was posted.  Here’s the gist of it.

Let’s assume the Hero will eventually be released by AT&T subsidized.

1. AT&T may not actually begin selling it for some time, while it will be available (unlocked) in Europe this or next month. If you don’t want to wait, you can buy it unlocked and use it on whichever GSM network you want.
2. If you have T-Mobile but want the phone anyway, you have to get one unlocked. If it’s subsidized by AT&T it will be locked to use AT&T only, plus you will have to get a service plan with AT&T, new or renewed, to get the discount. The largest discount will be for 2 years.
3. If you needed to take it to Europe/Asia and use the phone there without incurring huge roaming fees, you can get the unlocked phone and simply use a SIM card for local service.
4. Unlocked phones are also non-branded, missing any extra things installed by a carrier.

So, if you travel from the US to Europe and need your cell phone frequently this would be a good way to get a new cel and save on those hideous traveling charges the big carriers charge for this.

Try the Smart Gadgets website too. http://www.smggsm.com/. I would stay away from the ebay sites for now for this item. Some of the sales are questionable. As always go with someone that has a decent track record.
